Automating job interviews with AI voice agents

A study found using LLMs for job interviews increased job offers by 12%, acceptance rates by 18% and job retention up to 4 months (16-18%).

The study partnered with a recruitment form and conducted a field experiment across 70,000 applicants. The applicants were randomly assigned to be interviewed by human recruiters, AI voice agents, or given a choice between the two.

Analysis of the interview transcripts revealed the AI agents followed interview guidelines more consistently, resulting in more hiring-relevant information being collected.

Applicants accepted job offers with a similar likelihood and rated both the interview quality and the recruiter similarly.

When offered the choice, 78% of applicants chose the AI recruiter.

Applicants interviewed by AI were half as likely to report discrimination against them based on their gender.

The study only covered the realm of call-center jobs.

By automating noisy stages of information collection, AI can improve human decision-making. The study shows chatbot interviews may have advantages beyond convenience and cost.
